SABA LONDON DIARIES [PART TWO]
July 30, 2012 | 1 Comment
It’s my last few weeks left in London before returning to Sydney, so much to see and do and so little time. I wanted to do all the touristy stuff while I could, so I got my ticket for the two days Hop-On-And-Off Bus Tour around the city of London. I loved it, I got to see and experience many things including The London Eye, Buckingham Palace, The Thames River Cruise, The Beatles Nostalgic guided walk and Madame Tussauds Wax Museum to name a few. I was disappointed that I didn’t see Elton John, Boy George or Madonna at Madame Tussauds. I couldn’t believe how tall William and Harry are, and so handsome too, their looks and height seems to be from Princess Diana. Oscar Wilde was full or charisma and I loved his style of dressing, he was extremely tall and handsome.
I spent a whole day at Notting Hill, walking up and down the beautiful Portobello Road markets. I saw so many things that I only wished I had the money and space to take things home with me. All the vintage, all the art and all the furniture. The Portobello Markets isn’t just a feast for the eyes, but a feast for your heart and emotions. Many ancient but timeless pieces. There was a chocolate strawberries stand that had me hooked. They were the biggest strawberries I’d ever seen, that actually smelt like real strawberries and tasted so sweet. There must be something about Strawberries and London for me. The best Strawberry milk shake and now this… Dare I say, McDonald’s in London has the best Banana Thick Shakes, we don’t have them in Sydney.
The “West End Live” event was a real treat, held at Trafalgar Square. It showcased a small section of each and every ‘Theatre Show’ showing in London. This taste tester had me go see a few musicals. I saw “Chicago”, “Phantom of the Opera” and my most enjoyed musical “Rock Of Ages” which I saw not long after seeing the movie. I relate to “Rock Of Ages”, it’s one of the stories of my life, I laughed and cried, it was beautiful… I wasn’t really blown away by “Phantom Of The Opera”, I found it to be confusing and boring, although visually enjoyable. I really regret not getting the time to see “Les Miserables”, even more so with the movie coming out this year. This is definitely on the top of my list, when I visit the West End again…
After nearly a two hour train trip, I was so grateful to see Brighton’s mixed and cultured night life. I really should have stayed over night to experience the daytime cafe’s, shops and the seaside Pier. Sadly I caught the 4am train back to my apartment. I loved Brighton, it has a real romanticism feeling to it, it was so freezing the night I was there. I meet so many interesting people that night. I would defiantly go back there. My most enjoyed social was at The famous “Whisky Mist” at Park Lane, which I
enjoyed with Adjowa, a friend I met, who was doing Club Flyer promotions for ‘Club Escape’ which had, I couldn’t believe it, Two Pound shots the whole night. “Whisky Mist” is where all the stars in ‘Entertainment’ party at. I attended the Wednesday night where all the kooky, stylish and sophisticated go. I spoke to the loverly Dj Jason Buckham who I felt a real connection with the moment he played the extended version of Blondie’s “Heart Of Glass”, there was so many sexy men in suits there too…
The National Gallery had me in tears, all the ancient paintings were amazing, many paintings were almost full wall size with such decadent frames. I could believe myself, when I saw Paul Gauguin’s paintings “A Vase Of Flowers”, “Faa Iheihe” and “Bowl Of Fruit” my tears kept pouring. I emotionally revisited being in my last year of High School where I was so inspired by Paul Gauguin’s works in Art Class and it was also not long after the time my dad had passed away from cancer. Seeing Paul Gauguin’s works took me back, to the time when Dad had nailed up my humongous Gauguin inspired multi-media artwork in my family’s kitchen wall. It was a monument time in my life, so many memories came back.
Abbey Road Studios was so magical seeing all “The Beatles” fans from all over the world having graffiti personal messages on the fence. The Famous Abbey Road Beatle’s crossing was such an adventure, I spent over three hours there, talking to other tourists, taking pictures for each other and hearing peoples stories. I met Peter from Adelaide Australia there, he was full of world history stories and knowledge that we ended up having Italian dinner afterwards, the conversations continued and remained to be so fascinating that the Restaurant owners couldn’t even close up, seeing us there way past midnight…
I couldn’t have left London knowing that I didn’t visit where my Idol Boy George lives in his Castle. George was in Germany when I rang his doorbell, so I never got the tea invite in, depending on his mood, he’s known to either invite you in for a cup tea, or tell you to FXXK OFF. I have now being back in Sydney for just over three weeks, there is so much I love and miss about London, including the fashion, music and lifestyle. There’s so much more to experience when I return. As for my next, new chapter in Sydney, time will tell.
SABA London Diaries [Part One]
June 20, 2012 | 5 Comments
I’ve been in London 3 weeks now; my first week was spent recovering from my jet lag. Most of my tiredness has been due to my low Iron intake, so I’ve
increased my leafy greens and I’m taking Iron tablets as well. The apartment I’m staying in at Oval Kennington, has a coin operated laundry and a hand held shower hose, which I’m not too keen on. I love baths, however I really like a stand up shower for washing my hair and shaving. Kennington Park is where I do my daily exercise, provided it’s not raining. I’ve made a coffee friend there, Ian, whom I see from time to time. The train tube stations takes some getting use to, nothing is labeled properly, and they fail to be consistent on Sunday’s. I much prefer buses and taxis as you get to see more.
I miss my family and friends in Sydney; I do feel lonely at times as I’m still making friends here. So far I have met the famous
Drag Queen Miss Dusty O, I was fortunate to sing “Lady Midnight” at her Madame Jojo’s Club night called “Tranny Shack”. Lots of people came up to me afterwards saying how much they enjoyed my song and performance. I meet Sydney’s Mitzy Macintosh there too, who had a lot to say about her 2 years in London so far. I shook hands with Boy George at a DJ Gig called “DEELOODED”, the music was too loud and I couldn’t get close enough to have talked much, he’s quite tall and the Dj booth was up high. At BYRON Burgers Wardour Street, Soho, I experienced the best Strawberry thick shakes to date, it had real strawberry pieces in it and the ice cream was nice and thick, yummy. Sitting on the table next to me at Byron’s was the awesome William Baker, who is known for his work with “Kylie”, I was fortunate to meet and speak with him, I’m a huge fan of his work.

I really love the cosines of London, there’s so much history here, in the buildings, the retro deco, the cafes and eateries. At first I was disappointed with the food here, it doesn’t seem as fresh, it lacks flavours and effort in the preparation compared to Sydney food, however I found my favourite Indian at “Kennington Tandoori” on Kennington Road. The presentation, freshness and taste cant be compared to anywhere I’ve experienced. I’m in love with “Tesco’s” Sparkling Flavoured Waters range and “Nero” has to be my favourite place to have a coffee and people watch, particularly the one at Soho. I’ve made a coffee friend there, Jai, whom I see there from time to time.
I’m doing some song performance shows at both Tranny Clubs, “The Way Out Club” and “Stunners” next week for the promotion of my album, with more performance shows and different venues to be confirmed. It’s been cold and raining most days here, there was 4 days where the sun was out but in my 3 weeks so far, I haven’t seen much sun here.

I went to the “Queens Jubilee” Thames river appearance and to her carriage ride appearance, unless you have camped out the night before for both of those events, you don’t really see her. I really enjoyed the “Camden Markets”, I liked the busyness and carnival feel about it. The pushy and loud hard sell from certain stalls isn’t always pleasant; it’s an invasion to your shopping experience. I went to “Harrod’s”, I loved the Deli section, I bought a nice seafood salad and an olive baked bread, sadly they don’t have anywhere you can sit to eat it, you have to eat it outside.
The Carnaby Mall is fun for clothes shopping and people seeing. The fashion here is so funky, daring and full of colours, just the
way I like it. My favourite Pub eatery is “O’Neill’s”, the Vegetable Burger and Potato
Wedges with the “Ballymaloe Country Relish” has to be the best I’ve had. I’m yet to do the markets at Notting Hill and the Hop-On-And-Off bus 2-day tour. My daily emails, phones calls and networking will have to bring me something to come back for… I have less than 3 weeks to go, it’s a short time when there’s lots more to see and do… I can only extend my time here if a miracle happens. I would like to be here for the Madonna concert, as she never comes to Sydney. I would like to stay for Pete Waterman’s “Hit Factory Live”. Time will tell. So far, London I love you… Do you love me…
